What is a cushion cut diamond

The cushion cut is one of the most classic styles in the history of gemology. Its square or rectangular silhouette with rounded corners resembles the shape of a pillow, hence its name.

This cut has between 58 and 64 facets, arranged to maximize light dispersion and offer a warm and distinctive brilliance that sets it apart from more modern cuts.

Unlike the round brilliant cut, the cushion cut distributes light more softly and widely, creating large, striking flashes known as "crushed ice" in more modern versions.

It is a cut that combines timeless elegance with its own optical expressiveness.

Why choose a lab-grown cushion cut diamond

Lab-grown cushion cut diamonds offer exactly the same physical, chemical, and optical properties as natural diamonds of this cut.

The difference lies in their origin: they are created in controlled environments using CVD or HPHT processes, without mining extraction.

This makes them a more sustainable option, with complete traceability from their creation and at a significantly lower price than equivalent natural diamonds.

For the cushion cut, historically associated with high carat stones, the savings can be very substantial.

How a cushion cut is created in the lab

Once the diamond crystal has grown in the lab, lapidaries apply the cutting process to shape the cushion cut.

Each facet is precisely cut to maximize the diamond's refractive index, which is 2.42, the same as in natural diamonds.

There are two main variants:

  • Standard Cushion: with larger facets and more defined flashes.
  • "Crushed Ice" Cushion: with smaller facets that produce a more fragmented and modern brilliance effect.

Both variants are available in our collection and come with independent laboratory certification.

The 4Cs applied to the cushion cut

Carat or Carat Weight

The cushion cut retains more mass from the original crystal than other cuts, meaning that for the same carat weight, it offers a visually larger stone.

It is common to find cushions from 0.30 ct upwards in our collection.

Choosing the size depends on the intended setting and the desired visual effect.

Color

Cushion cuts tend to retain color with more intensity than brilliant cuts.

Therefore, in high grades like D and E, the visual result is particularly attractive.

Clarity

The broad facets of the cushion can make certain inclusions more visible than in other cuts.

The standard recommendation is to choose clarities above VS1 to ensure a clean appearance to the naked eye.

In the crushed ice variant, inclusions are more disguised thanks to the visual pattern of the cut.

Cut

Unlike the round cut, the cushion cut does not have a completely standardized cut grade scale by gemological laboratories.

The evaluation is based primarily on proportions:

  • 1.00 to 1.05 for square cushions.
  • 1.15 to 1.40 for rectangular cushions.

IGI reports describe symmetry and polish, which ideally should be Excellent or Very Good.

IGI certification for lab-grown cushion diamonds

All cushion diamonds in our collection come with certification from the International Gemological Institute (IGI), the leading organization specializing in lab-grown diamonds.

The IGI report includes the weight, exact dimensions, the 4Cs, and explicitly confirms the synthetic origin of the stone.

This certificate guarantees that the diamond received corresponds exactly to the described characteristics.

For lab-grown diamonds, the IGI is currently one of the most recognized international references.

How to choose your cushion diamond at Diamante de Laboratorio

The cushion cut works particularly well in halo-style engagement rings, where satellite stones enhance its rounded silhouette.

It is also very popular in classic solitaires with prongs at the corners that help protect the diamond's profile.

Our team can help you find the right stone according to your setting, budget, and aesthetic preferences.

If you are looking for a stone with great visual impact and unique character, the lab-grown cushion is one of the best options on the current market.

Cushion Lab-Grown Diamonds FAQ

The standard cushion has larger facets that produce distinct, concentrated flashes, similar to the brilliant cut. The crushed ice cushion has smaller, more numerous facets that create a more fragmented and modern sparkle effect. The choice depends on personal style: the standard is more classic, the crushed ice more contemporary.

Yes, compared to other cuts of the same carat weight. The cushion cut retains more top surface (the table) relative to its depth, which makes it visually larger. It is one of the most efficient cuts in terms of appearance per carat.

In general, yes. The larger facets of the cushion cut retain color more intensely than a round cut. For those who prioritize the whitest possible appearance, color E or higher is recommended for light settings.

Between 58 and 64 facets, depending on the variant. The standard cushion typically has 58 facets, while some versions with additional facets in the pavilion can have up to 64. These additional facets are what create the crushed ice effect.

For a square cushion, the ideal length-to-width ratio is between 1.00 and 1.05. For a rectangular cushion, between 1.15 and 1.35. This proportion is always indicated on the IGI certificate that accompanies each stone in our collection.

Yes. The refractive index of diamond is the same regardless of its origin, 2.42. A lab-grown cushion diamond with the same 4Cs as a natural one will produce the exact same optical effect. The difference is in origin, traceability, and price, not in physical properties.
