Diamonds IGI

The IGI certificate is the most widely used standard in the industry to guarantee the characteristics of each stone. Find your diamond with complete safety and transparency.

What are IGI certified diamonds

The IGI (International Gemological Institute) is the gemological certification institute with the highest volume of reports issued worldwide.

Founded in 1975 in Antwerp, it has a presence in the main international diamond industry centers, including Antwerp, New York, Mumbai, Tel Aviv, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

An IGI-certified diamond includes a detailed gemological report that documents its physical and optical characteristics according to the 4Cs system: color, clarity, cut, and carat weight.

The IGI was one of the first institutes to develop specific reports for lab-grown diamonds, becoming one of the global leaders in the sector.

At Diamante de Laboratorio, all IGI diamonds in our collection include their original report with a verifiable number in the institute's official database.

Why choose a lab-grown diamond with IGI certification

IGI certification provides objective guarantees on three fundamental aspects:

  • Impartiality: The analysis is carried out by independent certified gemologists, with no relation to manufacturers or sellers.
  • Traceability: Each report has a unique number laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle.
  • Lab-grown specialization: IGI has over a decade of experience certifying lab-grown diamonds.

The inscribed number allows verification of the diamond's characteristics directly on the official IGI portal, eliminating risks of substitution or error.

Additionally, IGI-certified diamonds can be up to 80% more affordable than mined diamonds, while maintaining exactly the same physical, chemical, and optical properties.

How IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds are created

IGI certifies diamonds produced using the two recognized industrial methods:

  • CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition)
  • HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature)

In the CVD process, a carbon-rich gas is introduced into a sealed chamber, and carbon is deposited layer by layer until a crystal is formed.

In HPHT, high temperatures and pressures replicate the conditions of the Earth's mantle to crystallize carbon around a seed.

The IGI identifies the growth method using infrared spectroscopy and other instrumental analyses, including this information in the certificate.

The IGI 4Cs of a diamond

Color

The IGI uses the same color scale as the GIA, ranging from D (completely colorless) to Z (with perceptible hues).

Most of the diamonds in our collection are between D and H.

D, E, and F grades are completely colorless, while G and H are near-colorless and maintain a clean appearance once set.

Clarity

The IGI clarity scale spans eleven grades, from FL to I3.

For fine jewelry, the minimum recommended clarity is VS2, guaranteeing no inclusions visible to the naked eye.

At Diamante de Laboratorio, we work with VS2 or higher clarity.

Cut

The cut determines how the diamond transforms light into brilliance, fire, and scintillation.

The IGI classifies cut into five levels:

  • Excellent
  • Very Good
  • Good
  • Fair
  • Poor

A diamond with an Excellent cut maximizes the optical properties of the stone.

Carat Weight

The carat (ct) is the unit of mass for a diamond: 1 ct is equivalent to 0.2 grams.

The IGI measures weight with four decimal places of precision.

Our collection includes diamonds from 0.30 ct up to stones exceeding 3 ct, available in multiple cuts and sizes.

IGI certification for lab-grown diamonds

The report issued for lab-grown diamonds is the IGI Laboratory Grown Diamond Report.

This document maintains the same rigor as natural diamond reports, clearly specifying:

  • Synthetic origin of the stone
  • Growth method: CVD or HPHT
  • The 4Cs independently evaluated

The report number is laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle and can be publicly verified without the need for registration.

This ensures that the stone received exactly matches the characteristics described in the certificate.

At Diamante de Laboratorio, all orders are shipped within 12 days, including the original IGI report and full shipping tracking.

How to choose your IGI diamond

To correctly choose an IGI-certified diamond, we recommend prioritizing the 4Cs in this order:

  • Cut
  • Color
  • Clarity
  • Carat Weight
  • Cut is the factor that most influences the visual result. A diamond with an Excellent cut and VS2 clarity can project more brilliance than a stone with higher clarity but poorer proportions.

In color, the differences between D and G are usually imperceptible to the naked eye under normal lighting.

In white gold or platinum settings, D-F colors enhance the colorless effect. In yellow or rose gold, G-H grades work perfectly and allow for budget optimization.

For clarity, VS2 is the recommended minimum standard. In more transparent cuts, such as emerald or step cut, it may be preferable to opt for VS1 or VVS2.

Finally, remember that the visual size of a diamond does not depend solely on the carat weight, but also on the proportions and efficiency of the cut.

Frequently Asked Questions About IGI Certified Diamonds

Yes. The IGI certifies lab-grown diamonds as genuine diamonds with the same chemical composition (pure carbon in a cubic crystalline structure), the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale, and the same optical properties as mined diamonds. The only difference is their origin.

Both are internationally recognized gemological laboratory reports that apply the 4Cs system with calibrated equipment and scientific methodology. IGI has a higher volume of certifications for lab-grown diamonds, which has made it the most common standard in this market. GIA is the organization that established the 4Cs system and is especially recognized in the mined diamond segment. In both cases, the report guarantees the stone's declared characteristics.

Yes. At Diamante de Laboratorio, you can select an IGI-certified diamond from the collection and combine it with the jewelry design you prefer. Shipping takes less than 12 days, and the original IGI report is included.

The collection includes the most sought-after cuts: round brilliant, princess, emerald, oval, pear, cushion, marquise, and radiant, among others. Each diamond comes with its corresponding IGI report detailing all its characteristics.

No. The report number is laser inscribed on the diamond's girdle (the widest part, also called the girdle or filet) with a microscopic scale. A jeweler's loupe or gemological microscope is needed to read it. However, the number is perfectly identifiable with the right tools and remains as a permanent record on the stone.
